Tulip's Story

We rescued Tulip about 3 1/2 years ago. She was blind in one eye and had suffered an injury to her right ear. We didn't know any history on her and didn't even know her actual age. Our granddaughter wanted her so we took her home. Tulip was a faithful companion and we all grew to love her very much. After about 3 years, Tulip began to lose her teeth and had a hard time chewing her food. She was losing weight and soon after, also developed painful arthritis in her left hind leg and hip.

Then, that dreadful day came when we had to make the decision to end her suffering. The vet told us Tulip was over 30 years old. We knew that we had given her some wonderful, loving last years. It is always a hard thing to do to let an animal go. But together, we prayed THE HORSE'S PRAYER and let her go. Tulip is now at the RAINBOW BRIDGE waiting until we meet again.

So many people have felt the way we feel about Tulip. And yet, for all the thousands of horse owners who so dearly love their horses, there are many horses that go unwanted and suffer neglect and painful hunger. Together, as a community, we can all help. We can become a huge network. A network of valuable resources for all horse people...for all horses. That is why Hearts 4 Horses was started.

So we welcome you to Hearts4Horses.Com. Please feel free to look around or stop by Hearts 4 Horses...HORSE CHAT 24/7 and introduce yourself. We are glad you are visiting. This site is to become "everyone's site", the entire "horse community" can share, learn and be a part of each other's happiness, and can offer tender support in times of sadness. Again, we WELCOME YOU and THANK YOU for making this website part of your day...

Welcome to Spirit of Equus Rescue: A Herd-Based Holistic Healing and Educational Center

In 2002 the Rescue evolved as a project of Institute of the Southwest, a non-profit California corporation and 501(c)3 public charity established in 1998. After the president became aware of the plight and number of unwanted, abused, neglected and slaughter-bound horses she felt obligated to spread the word about the Premarin industry in particular. Since that Spring of 2002 when we accepted our first horse, the organization has matured into a center for holistic healing and educational tool for the public.

HOLISTIC HEALING
What distinguishes us from other larger rescue groups is our focus on healing. Abused, neglected, PMU and slaughter-bound horses suffer varying degrees of stress and trauma in addition to medical issues. Our healing program involves many hours a day with each horse, evaluating and working with these issues through the application of holistic modalities. In addition to integrating a horse into the herd environment, we utilize massage, acupressure, energy healing, and animal communication We incorporate the dynamics of prey animal and herd behavior as resources of understanding to help our horses heal and rebound from their past. For horses who have trust issues with humans, we work especially hard to communicate with them through respectful interactions, rewarding their attempts at partnership. Each horse is offered extensive handling, personal attention, and every effort is made to meet each horse's emotional needs on a daily basis.

EDUCATION
We collaborate with other non-profit organizations to bring information to the public on the humane treatment of horses, who are at high risk in many areas of service to humanity. We offer classes and educational opportunities in the area of equine bodywork and other equine health-related topics. We were one of the first rescue organizations to offer equine experiential learning workshops, where the horse is a conduit for human reflection and life coaching, a field that is growing extensively. In the past 4 years we have offered classes in Equine First Aid, Behavior and Communication, and Equine Healing Modalities.

FUNDING
At this time Spirit of Equus Rescue is supported by donations only. The organization receives no grants, but continues to apply for support from grant-giving entities supportive of animal rights organizations. Please consider supporting our horses through sponsorships (monthly donations for feed and health care) or a general donation to be used where it is needed most. Three of our horses are currently unsponsored which creates a financial burden on the rescue each year. Please visit our horses web pages and consider helping one of them with feed and health-care. We thank you in advance for your support of horses in need and help us prepare them for a bright future in a loving home.

Spirit of Equus Rescue is one of many organizations in the U.S. dedicated to serving the needs of the unwanted horse. The organization is opposed to the slaughter of horses for any reason, and works with other anti-slaughter individuals and groups to rescue horses from feedlots, auctions and PMU farms.

While the Rescue interfaces with individuals, groups and agencies throughout California, its support base is in Ventura County. The horses were housed in Ventura County prior to coming to the Sacramento area which offers us more grazing land.

Through a web-based emergency rescue "Emerald Alert", the organization's influence is felt across the country through a growing network of horse owners, rescues and equine professionals supportive of our mission.

Currently the Rescue is registered with the following agencies:
LA County Animal Control
 Kern County Animal Control
 Central Coast SPCA
